90s Rave Makeup Guide

This was a decade of bright, neon colors, glitter, and bold graphic designs. The rave scene was relatively new in the 90s but it quickly became a place for an iconic form of self-expression, playing off the decade's trends and defining rave makeup and outfits in its time.

Unfortunately, digital cameras were still rare and iPhones were non-existent so there wasn't much documentation of the early days of the 90's rave scene. But social media platforms are becoming a canvas for the reinterpretation of '90s rave aesthetic, with makeup artists and enthusiasts sharing their modern takes on these nostalgic trends. Neon Color Palette

Neon was all the rage in the 90's, while the trend at the time wasn't too common in makeup looks at the time we now have a sea of neon makeup palette to play off of the neon trend. Opt for neon shades like hot pink, electric blue, lime green, and bright yellow. Bonus points if your makeup compliments your rave outfit.

FYI - Liquid eyeliners were also all the rage in the 90s as well whether you go for a liquid neon liner or a black liner over neon eye shadow either look will serve.

Glitter Everywhere

If there's one word that encapsulates 90s rave makeup, it's "glitter." Ravers embraced the art of sparkle with open arms, applying glitter generously on eyelids, cheeks, and even lips. The glitter gels were even used on shoulders, arms and legs. This glittery trend was more than just a makeup choice; it was a statement of individuality and a celebration of the unconventional, playful and fun.

Experiment with different types of glitter, like holographic, chunky glitter or matte neon glitter to create different effects. Side note- please only purchase biodegradable glitter.

Adhesive rhinestones were also a popular choice to add some sparkle to your face. These of course are still popular in the rave scene today but got their roots in the early days of the rave scene.

Bold Lips: The Darker, the Better

While the eyes can be the canvas for neon and glitter, the lips are a playground for bold experimentation.

Dark, moody lip shades like deep purples, blacks, and blues became the hallmark of 90s rave makeup. Matte lipsticks, often in unconventional colors, were favored for their longevity during hours of non-stop dancing. The juxtaposition of dark lips against vibrant eye makeup created a harmonious and edgy balance, amplifying the overall rave aesthetic.

Another look is going for a dark lip liner on a nude lip. Choose a pencil two shaders darker or cooler than your natural lip tone. The classic 90's lip pencil was a shade of brown but on a darker skin tone, a soft grey or ashy plum will look great.

Fresh Faced and Ready to Party

When it comes to the rest of your makeup, you want to keep it relatively simple to let your rave makeup take center stage. Opt for a light foundation or BB cream, and keep your brows natural-looking - avoid the pencil brow trend of the 90's.. shm

Bold Accessories

Finally, don't forget to finish off your look with some bold accessories. Neon jewelry, colorful hair extensions, visors, scrunchies, butterfly clips and funky sunglasses are all great options to complete your rave-inspired outfit.
